Round Dancing is the act of couple dancing in a circle around a hall to the rhythm of music which is choreographed so that each dancer takes precisely the same step, simultaneously, on each beat of music.

Round Dancing has developed its own characteristics and program. It gives everyone the joy and delight of moving to the music and the opportunity to have fun with new friends.

The dancers are led through all dance routines by verbal prompting of a professional cuer. Many persons have entered Round Dance activity with neither partner having had any dance background; others enter Round Dancing after gaining proficiency in other forms of dance.

As in developing any skill, a couple needs to attend a series of lessons to understand the figures and language used. Round Dance clubs provide a place for the dancer to develop proficiency with the figures and/or increase his/her repertoire of dances as well as provide the Round Dancer a place to go just to dance.

The Merry-Go-Rounds Round Dance Club was founded in Austin in 1983. Aubrey and Joann Smelser are the instructors/cuers for the club. They began teaching and cueing for the Merry-Go-Rounds Club in 1985.
